Abstract

In this text, we chronologically explain the artistic process behind the creation of the artist's book –a work of visual poetry– Náufraga, born from the protest "Whales or Gas," which seeks to prevent the construction of a gas pipeline in the Gulf of California. To do so, we focus on its materiality, its textuality, and its overall concept, as we believe that the union of these three elements reveals the multiple interpretations a literary object can have when its medium is modified. In creating the book, different materials and supports were chosen, attempting to meaningfully combine the poetic imagery of the text with various marine elements, as well as with the historical significance of the sea and the protest. Therefore, we also describe the various versions the book has had, both physical and digital, in the pursuit of optimal adaptability, cost-effectiveness, malleability, and dissemination.
